TERRY VAN DUYN
Terry Van Duyn served three elected terms as a North Carolina state legislator after first being appointed in 2014. She was chosen Democratic Whip by her peers her freshman year, and in that position, she advocated tirelessly for Medicaid Expansion and adequate funding for public schools.
She has an MBA from University of Connecticut, 1981, and a BA from the University of Illinois. On graduating from there in 1973 Terry began a career in the nascent field of data processing, eventually providing support for mission-critical systems at Fortune 500 companies. Success in that field allowed her to change direction and focus on public service.
In 1992, she moved with her family to Asheville, NC., where she turned her energy to the non-profit sector, serving in leadership positions on several boards, including The Autism Society of NC, Meals on Wheels, the Council on Aging, and Pisgah Legal Services.
She was appointed to two terms on the Buncombe County Department of Health and Human Services board, and when the Affordable Care Act was introduced in 2010, Terry became a Healthcare Navigator and helped many people secure insurance, often for the first time in their lives. That advocacy continued as an elected official.
Currently she serves on the boards of IFPHA, Pisgah Legal Services, NC Justice Center, NC Child, and the NC State Board of Community Colleges.
